SASC Membership Requirements:
It is an honour and a privilege to be a member of the South African Society of Cinematographers. Our Constitution refers to each individual’s integrity, artistry, ability and a body of work worthy of our recognition. These principles ensure the qualifications of the candidate under consideration, from which we should
not deviate. The SASC Board of Governors have established the following requirements for a cinematographer for active membership.
Membership of the Society shall consist of Full Members, Retired Members – Emeritus, South African Society of Operators – SASO, SASC, Patron Members and Honorary Members.
Full Member
1.1 An applicant who wishes to apply for SASC membership, must be nominated by at least two (2) SASC members in full standing and have a minimum of eight years as Director of Photography
Applications will then be forwarded to the SASC Board of Governors, who after reviewing the applicant’s current Showreel (Body of Work), CV, personal information and any other relevant documentation, will then make their decision known to the applicant through the secretary.
Membership is granted at the sole discretion of the SASC Board of Governors.
The applicant must be currently active as a Director of Photography, and not retired.
1.2 All full members in good standing shall have the right and be required by the constitution (By-Law Article 5) to place the letters SASC after their names on-screen credits, in any publicity or otherwise and in general correspondence. The wording behind your name should have no comma after it and the SASC must be in capitals with no stops in between i.e. First Name, Last Name SASC
The SASC and SASO acronyms are SASC Professional Designations, and both are owned and administered by the SASC (South African Society of Cinematographers)
1.3 This SASC membership includes full voting rights and currently carries a single joining fee plus an annual subscription fee. This membership currently carries a joining fee of R650 plus an annual subscription of R500 per annum.
South African Society of Operators – SASO
SASO membership is open to specialist camera operators (i.e. Steadicam, crane, jib, drone & underwater) who have undertaken work that does not fit the full SASC membership criteria. The applicant must be a resident of the Republic of South Africa and must be nominated by two existing members in good standing and approved by the SASC BOARD OF GOVERNORS. SASO Members are required to use the acronym SASO after their name in credits and correspondence, for example, Your Name SASO. All members will have access to SASC internal communication and correspondence etc.
This membership currently carries a joining fee of R650 plus an annual subscription of R500 per annum.
Associate Member
Associated membership is open to Cinematographers who have undertaken work that does not fit the full SASC membership criteria and are active as a professional practising cameraman or camerawoman. The applicant must be a resident of the Republic of South Africa and must be nominated by an existing member in good standing and approved at a society meeting of the SASC BOARD OF GOVERNORS. Associate SASC Members are entitled to use the wording “Associate SASC or Assoc.SASC “after their names on correspondence and CVs but NOT on any SCREEN CREDITS. All members will have access to the SASC’s internal communication and correspondence and will be listed as an Associate Member of the SASC on our website giving them credibility.
This membership currently carries a joining fee of R300 plus an annual subscription of R250 per annum.
