2019 VISIBLE SPECTRUM AWARDS
The SASC wishes to recognise the highest levels of excellence in Cinematography currently active in our industry. We also remember and pay tribute to all those excellent film technicians who have gone before us who played a pivotal role in the growth of our industry.
The 2019 SASC Visible Spectrum Awards – VSA are dedicated to the vision of the founder members of the SASC and to the current South African cinematographers who are carving a name for themselves both locally and abroad.
We celebrate and salute our filmmakers, past present and future.
We fervently support the steadfast professionals who ensure a commitment to producing the highest quality images and look forward to the work of all the young up and coming Cinematographers who are making names for themselves in this highly competitive industry: the brave talent meeting the challenges of ever changing technology, demanding creative energy and the constantly shifting “cutting-edge”.
The SASC salutes you all and is committed to forging into the future as a stable and solid support platform, encouraging the highest quality of work, promoting the needs of the Cinematographer and celebrating the excellence that shines through.
These awards celebrate and acknowledge the very best work produced by South African
Cinematographers. This is an opportunity for Cinematographers to show off their craft, innovation and personalised styles, and to see how these rates with their peers. President’s report April 2019
Welcome to all members,
We have in the past been asked the Question “What is the SASC doing for me”, well, we as the Board have been active in trying to add more value over and above the benefit of placing the international recognized SASC logo behind your name. We have had new members joining us and based on the quality of the work, we can be very proud of what our members are producing and hope that it will impress our international peers again by maintaining the continual quality of our Cinematography. The President was asked to be a judge for the new category The Young Emerging Cinematographer (IMAGO AWARDS) and one of our members “Zenn van Zyl” was also a nominee in this category who reached the final round and considering the quality of all the work submitted, it was a great achievement for him and us.
In the past year we have had a successful awareness campaign at the Mediatech exhibition and have realized that the industry still supports us wholeheartedly, which has galvanized us to move forward with renewed vigor.
Our Secretary has facilitated access to the ASC online magazine to our paid-up members and we are grateful for the support from the ASC.
The new SASO- South African Society of Operators – under the patronage of the SASC credit, which is for accredited operators e.g.; Steadicam operators, underwater operators, Go-pro and aerial etc. This group is steadily growing
We have proposed a working relationship with SACIA, through Kevan Jones to get a new look Consultative Committee and to create workshops and upskilling interventions which will include Master classes for existing Cinematographers, this is a work in progress.
We are busy revamping our website, for which we need your support in the form of articles, content and pictures.
We are holding the Visible Spectrum Award this year and we have been very pleased with the work we have seen coming from our membership applications, so it should be a very competitive outcome.
But all this is only viable if we get the necessary support and participation from our membership, and we ask you to assist us to make this all happen.
We want the SASC to maintain the position of recognizing excellence in the Field of Cinematography and maintaining the high Standard of membership that is available to all that practice the Craft
Signed: U Beckmann SASC Date: 17-04-2019

The SASC Congratulates all the cinematographers who won at this year’s SAFTA awards: Dereck Joubert, Gaopie Kabe, Trevor Brown SASC, Marc Rowlston, Sevetian Maslamoney, Zeno Petersen. We invite those winners to submit their work for consideration for the SASC Designation
It is with a sad heart that I inform you that a great SASC member, Keith Rose has passed away.
The board of governors send their heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of this wonderfully gifted man, Keith Rose
May His Dear Soul Rest In Peace
On behalf of the President and members of the board of governors of the society, I have good news for you all.
The SASC is now formally registered by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) as a professional Designation and is now listed on the National Qualifications Framework. This is made possible by our affiliation agreement with The South African Communications Industries Association (SACIA) under the auspices of Kevan Jones.
We are members of SACIA, and the registered Professional Designation number is ‘No. 857’ – SASC, Professional Cinematographer’
This means that if you are a paid-up member you will automatically become part of the broader SACIA initiative – the aims of which are to elevate and maintain the highest levels of professionalism within the cinematographic discipline in South Africa. In order to achieve and maintain levels of professionalism, we have rigorously investigated adhering to and complying with CPD (Continuing Professional Development) criteria – as laid out by SACIA in compliance with SAQA regulations in this regard. The board of SASC will be sharing details of the CPD requirements to all of our members in due course. Remember, as an active member, your current participation in working structures within the film industry, as well as your leadership and/or mentorship role is also incorporated into the CPD points accrual system.
In the next two and a half years it is expected that it will be required by law to have a certified Professional Designation.
Join us in elevating the visibility and good standing of the society to all industry players. Our association with SACIA will greatly contribute towards creating a sustainable path for professionals in filmmaking in our country – who wish to attain and promulgate the highest standards of cinematography.
We will be having a general meeting in the near future to update the members on the way forward.
We thank you.
On behalf of the SASC Board of Governors
